After repeated strikes on the road crossings over the lock, in autumn '22 the Russians apparently filled the canal to rebuild the road across. Presumably the lock canal also had the function of being an overflow to release high water around the dam. If the canal remained blocked this safety feature would not have been there to manage the high levels in the reservoir above in spring '23.
