Russian origins of this article cannot be conclusively established. I initially thought that "a piece of Guano" is a give-away and originates in Russian говно (=crap/shit, vulgar). However, that failed since that word is proto-slavic and is same or similar in other slavic languages; as well as it has analogues in Aryan, Greek, and indigenous American/"Indian" languages (leads, here).
