A clean break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm - The Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies Jerusalem, Washington

Given the nature of the regime in Damascus, it is both natural and moral that Israel abandon the slogan "comprehensive peace" and move to contain Syria, drawing attention to its weapons of mass destruction program, and rejecting "land for peace" deals on the Golan Heights...
And Damascus fears that the 'natural axis' with Israel on one side, central Iraq and Turkey on the other, and Jordan, in the center would squeeze and detach Syria from the Saudi Peninsula. For Syria, this could be the prelude to a redrawing of the map of the Middle East which would threaten Syria's territorial integrity...
Most important, it is understandable that Israel has an interest supporting diplomatically, militarily and operationally Turkey’s and Jordan’s actions against Syria, such as securing tribal alliances with Arab tribes that cross into Syrian territory and are hostile to the Syrian ruling elite.

I don't think Israel is the instigator of the recent collapse, but obviously has stakes involved. This ultimately may have to do with Iran n. weapons program, and supply lines to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Noted, the current incursion is towards Lebanon, and not far from the M1 motorway from Damascus to Beirut. As for strikes, this is mostly to destroy piles of weapons that could be sold into the wrong hands, even if not used in a hostile way by the new authorities; there are some indications that powers involved, including Russia, have compatible attitudes towards this (actually, first reports on strikes in the Shiite media attributed the strikes to Russia itself. That may be not accurate but in general sudden departures create need to have remaining stuff destroyed) --Resup (talk) 05:10, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
+ Militants from Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have uncovered one of the fortified underground missile bases hidden within the Qalamoun mountains in Syria. These strategic facilities were built by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with support from Syrian forces near Damascus. 1, 2. "More than a dozen extremely violent Israeli airstrikes in Qalamoun, Syria, with the aim of destroying the Iranian-made strategic tunnel complexes, that were supposed to be storing & launching ballistic missiles in the future" 3
